Another New Talent

I’d love to say I told you so but the winner on the Australian version of the Voice turned out to be Karise Eden (posts below) which I predicted from the moment she opened her mouth. It’s a pity I didn’t put money on it at the time but such is life. Her voice was so unique that suited soul and blues type songs. Another young singer that grabbed my attention in the same way was Emma Louise again; she is only very young but has a unique style that is very appealing. Particularly to the type of music I listen to a lot, check her out.

Voyager space craft

One of my favorite things and my domain name pays homage to it. Fifty-five years after humans first escaped the bounds of Earth and launched a satellite into orbit, we are about to cross another frontier. We will soon extend our reach for the first time into true outer space – the vast emptiness beyond the protection of the sun.  Voyager 1 was launched in 1977.  Exploring the outer planets, it was pointed toward deep space and a new mission. Voyager will be outside our own solar system and hopefully new clues into the origins of the universe. Voyager 1 has enough fuel and power to send messages until 2020.

Venus Transit

Saw this yesterday which I thought was cool, lucky for us Cpt Cook ended up landing in Australia when he was sent to observe the last Venus transit across the sun. Which is a a once-in-a-lifetime event that will not be seen for another 105 years.

Kiama Trip

Just got back from some healthy time away at Kiama. Loved this seaside town and the
local council should be commended for having all the lawn area neat & tidy.
Because believe me there is a lot of lawn to keep trim and not a sign of any litter anywhere.

The Voice

While I am not a fan of reality TV I was lucky enough to catch the Australian version of The Voice just as this young girl singer came on and she was mesmerizing. What’s even more amazing she spent a lot of her short years living on the streets before becoming a ward of the state. At only 19 yrs of age she found music after being fostered to a family who owned a music store teaching her how to play guitar. Never had a singing lesson in her life just listened to some of those classic rock stars while at the music store I guess.  Karise Eden sounds like Janis Joplin, Adele & Amy Winehouse all at once. She sings a Amy Winehouse song better than what Amy ever did. I hope she wins, she deserves too.

Facebook

One of the comments I made before the launch of Facebook on the stock market that
as a business enterprise it did not make sense to me. I do not doubt the popularity of
Facebook but personally it has never appealed even though I have an account it is hardly
what I call active. Targeted advertising using data statistics from users is fine but the real power of product exposure is from the users themselves connecting. Not on the basis of liking products or services. I mean what does it say if 200 users like a product and 900 million don’t care to comment. So I don’t forsee any huge profit to be had in buying Facebook shares.

Carbon Tax coming

At the end of next month will be the start of the carbon tax in Oz and to some people they think it’s the end of the World as we know it. Well the same thing was said when we introduced a VAT tax and it was a little blip on the economic radar and it all fizzled out to nothing. I predict the same with the carbon tax;  I think it is a good idea to gear the economy up for trading on clean energy. It also adds incentive for Green tech to develop with a reward at the other end. After all with the Asian Tigers putting all those new cars on the road every week, adding to the consumer base. This will only keep the price of oil high and limit what is a finite resource. How it will turn out in the future is anyone’s guess. It may be another energy source or some super battery powered vehicle. I’m just waiting a bit before jumping into alternative hybrid cars just yet but in order to feel a little bit green I have put the solar panels on my roof. 🙂

Well I can tick off seeing the sunrise in East coast and set in the west coast off my Bucket list. I’m still deciding wether to cross off a drive there or not, its a long haul and as  someone said you would want to make sure it is worth it. Which means stay there long enough to see as many things as you can.

Ships off shore

Caught this pic while visiting Perth last week, notice how it makes those huge tankers look like tug boats. It was anchored 4 nautical miles off shore in Fremantle. The 95,000-tonne aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson and guided-missile cruiser USS Bunker Hill close by not in view.  Another thing that impressed me about Western Australia was the drivers, unlike the East coast cars for the most part observed the speed limits. Anyone who has taken a drive on the Pacific highway on the East coast knows it’s nothing like that.
