Canberra Centenary 2013

The city I live in hosts it’s centenary year in 2013 with lots of events planned during the year. I hope to make it to the ones appealing to me. Although I notice there is a web site registering 100 things locals like about living here which will be compiled after the votes are tallied in March. But on my list of favorite things is the walk around Canberra Lake Burley Griffin foreshores. It can be congested at times with cyclists but if you go early enough it’s a walk you have without noticing you have done it.

US Politics

As the US presidential Elections are fast drawing to a close I thought I would throw my hat into the ring on who will win. At the risk of offending some it has been my opinion that Obama will win a second term. Not because he is Mr Marvellous but basically because the other side of the argument has been hi-jacked by, “The Tea Party” movement. This gives the Republicans little room to move towards sanity during an Economic crisis. I thought Romney would have been a better candidate 2008 but that didn’t pan out. Only now for a guy who did have some decent ideas has been forced to shelve them due to these extremist views infiltrating the Republican movement.

Griffith NSW

This was taken from a visit to Griffith over the past week which is now the center of attention regarding the Murray-Darling Basin Plan and water rights. The main entry road into the town displayed some interesting ways of using oranges without eating them. I wonder how long those displays will survive before someone wants to taste.

Canberra Floriade

It’s blossom time again in my city with the annual Floriade festival which comes around
every spring. Only this spring has seen some wild weather in the past week with everything from massive downpours on the East Coast to snow in places where they never get snow. But all the same when the sun finally comes out it makes for a very scenic walk or bike ride around the Lake at this time of year.

Fitzroy Falls

Just got back from the coast again, only this time stopped at Fitzroy Falls and took some pics. One thing that did annoy me thou was the placement of the sign labelling the falls. It was all along the front of the lookout protruding out like an awning from the railing. As a result it blocked almost every angle of getting a decent picture. A sign a few metres back on the side rails would have been perfect but maybe they wanted to sell some postcards from the tourist shop that had been taken by helicopter.

First image is the view of the falls, the other is the view from the top of the falls down the valley.

Australian Politics

While I’m sure Julia Gillard is a capable leader. However in the public’s eyes she is perceived as just going through the motions when trying to explain a policy. There is no passion in her voice, its monotone and quite frankly sounds at times like a fingernail across a chalkboard. It must be getting pretty bad that Bob Brown when he was in office seemed to be the only one making informed comments on the carbon tax. Why ? because you could see and hear there was a sincere belief in what he was saying, he had passion in his ideology. Regardless of whether you agree with him or not. The Labor party needs to get some passion back into the debate instead of talking about something as though it’s remote from them. There have been some good policies which will stand up in the future as being absolutely correct. As for Tony Abbott, well for a Rhodes Scholar he comes across as being about as informed as someone who just woke up from a coma and the year is 1950. How anyone could even contemplate voting for him is beyond me. So what are we left with, two choices of which both parties picked the worst possible choice as leader to represent them. Had the Liberals let common sense prevail with Malcolm Turnbull they could have been in Government by now. Had Labor not tossed out Kevin Rudd they also could have also been in Government in their own right. So really there are no choices that can even satisfy a voting public that is sick of the “NO’s” from one side and just as tired of Government that is almost doing a half decent job yet has no one in the front line capable of selling a six pack to a road worker in the middle of summer.

Stairway to Heaven

Probably the most played song over the past 40 yrs and on a lot of people’s list ranked in the top ten rock songs of all time. However I was completely blown away when I heard this live performance, played by two artists Rodrigo y Gabriela on guitar. It is so skillful that one can only be impressed.

Mars Curiosity

I thought this was awesome, a unbelievable landing and it all went like clockwork. It could have been the end of NASA had it failed, I mean in terms of funding. But  I am so glad that  ingenuity won out over politics in the end. Curiosity is a not your average offroader. Nuclear-powered, its plutonium batteries provide enough grunt to keep it trundling around at a leisurely very slow pace for maybe a decade or even two. During this time, it will have the opportunity to poke, prod and zap with its laser the complex suite of rocks in Gale Crater and maybe even to climb the mighty three-mile high Mount Aeolis (also known as Mount Sharp at NASA) which lies in its centre.

London Olympics 2012

Just back from another trip and in time for the 2012 London Olympics. I enjoy watching all the sports especially ones the Aussies are involved in. Most of all like watching the Basketball and swimming. But the best commercial for the Olympics I have seen in a long time belongs to the dedicated to the mum’s of the world. Obviously they know Mum’s do a lot of washing so it’s from a cleaning product company.

Another New Talent

I’d love to say I told you so but the winner on the Australian version of the Voice turned out to be Karise Eden (posts below) which I predicted from the moment she opened her mouth. It’s a pity I didn’t put money on it at the time but such is life. Her voice was so unique that suited soul and blues type songs. Another young singer that grabbed my attention in the same way was Emma Louise again; she is only very young but has a unique style that is very appealing. Particularly to the type of music I listen to a lot, check her out.
